At Webb & Brown-Neaves, innovation is at the forefront of everything we do, and this is especially true for our incredible display homes scattered throughout Perth. We spoke to the brain behind their designs, WB Design Innovation Lead, Joseph Calasara.

After more than 15 years with the company, Joseph is one of the most admirable members of the team, having worked his way up from drafting to being in charge of designing all of our impressive, award-winning display homes.

Joseph has always been creative, coming from a family of Designers. “In my family, there are two architects, one interior designer, and I am also married to an architect,” he said. “Ever since I was little, my parents told me I would be an architect one day, and they were right.”

Joseph has a degree in architecture, as well as years of industry experience. “I started my career as a junior architect, before venturing into the large-scale construction industry as a project architect, working on hotels and commercial complexes,” he said.

He reached his current position at Webb & Brown-Neaves by working his way up. “When I worked in the WB Drafting Team, I had the chance to join the WB Design Competition for a display home,” he said. “Although I didn’t win, they saw potential in me, and trained me to assist with the display program.”

“Now, more than 11 years later, I am in charge of innovation and new product of the brand.

Having worked in design for nearly 15 years, Joseph is an expert in his field, noting his attention to detail as one of his biggest strengths. “My attention to detail is probably one of my best strengths in my role,” he said. “The people I work with know how particular I am with every little detail. I spend time looking at every single page of a drawing before it goes to site.”

Joseph enjoys the innovative nature of his role, and seeing his intricate designs being brought to life. “I love being involved in the whole process of the display program, and I am lucky enough to be a part of it from the feasibility study to the presentation of the display home,” he said.

“My role gives me the ability to be involved in the creative process and bring an innovative attitude to my work.”

Something else Joseph loves about working for Webb & Brown-Neaves is the people he works with. “I love my team,” he said. “It’s the people at work that motivate me to wake up and go to work every day.

I work extremely closely with the likes of Melissa Redwood, our Interior Design Consultant, and our suppliers to ensure we achieve the best result possible in every intricate detail of our display homes.”

Designing such fascinating homes is no easy feat, and Joseph is always kept busy at work. “My day consists of designing and detailing, concept development, material selection and presentations, site visits, and supplier and consultant meetings.”

Joseph is always on the lookout for new ideas; perhaps one of the contributing factors to his success as a Designer. “I always make sure creativity is part of my everyday routine as we are surrounded by limitless inspiration. The best ideas are found in unusual places in unexpected ways.”

Joseph’s main tip when it comes to designing your dream home, is to avoid rushing things. “Take your time and do your homework,” he said. “Understanding what you need, collect as much inspiration and information as you can, and we will guide you through the rest of the design process.”

“As designers, we are skilled to interpret the client’s abstract ideas, guide them through the creative journey of building, assist in understanding compliance and regulations, and provide solutions to issues in a creative way.”
