Serene and unassuming from the street, The Planar is a beautiful composition of clean planes and vertical lines.

We spoke with Webb & Brown-Neaves Interior Design Consultant, Melissa Redwood and General Manager, Lincoln Trager from The Maker Designer Kitchens about The Planar’s soothing and modern kitchen design.

“I wanted to ensure that The Planar’s kitchen was thoughtfully considered to create a space that is balanced in simplicity,” said Melissa.

“I worked with both The Maker and WB Designer, Joseph Calasara, on the kitchen layout before delving into the selections. We all wanted to ensure that this kitchen was functional, seamlessly transitioning into the rest of the home and provided a focal point to the main entertaining and living areas.”

One of the major features of the kitchen is the cantilever island bench. It showcases a striking two-tone design that combines Polytec Prime Oak Woodmatt with Caesarstone Raw Concrete. The Prime Oak split level splices through the stone adding extra visual interest to the island.

“Whether you’re preparing a meal for the family, or working from home, the cantilever island bench in The Planar allows for flexibility in functionality without compromising on style,” said Lincoln.

“This design is exceptional and allows you to double your kitchen island as the main area or provide extra seated eating space in your home.”

“When deciding on kitchen cabinetry, I always select a few key colours that can be used throughout the home, including in the entertainment area, bathrooms and study nooks which provides consistency and harmony,” said Melissa.

Coordinating your cabinetry colour throughout your home ensures cohesion. This can be done by coordinating handles, sinks and tapware with other home fixtures such as light switches and door handles to establish a strong theme throughout your home.

“I used white cabinetry doors to one side of the kitchen, contrasted by the soft oak Polytec timber to inject some warmth whilst still maintaining the brightness of the space.”

Lighting is imperative to any kitchen and The Planar features luxurious integrated lighting to the cabinetry that is functional but also highlights key design features of the kitchen such as the single slab porcelain splashback and open shelving.

“Concealed or integrated lighting such as LED strip lighting has been used to provide a bright and airy feel to the home, and to showcase the porcelain splashback, open shelving areas and bar area,” said Melissa.

Integrated lighting can always be used for decorative purposes, but it also proves functional in spaces like the pantry where light can traditionally be limited.

“The Maker Designer Kitchens always recommend integrated lighting as it makes sense to improve usability. Sensor lighting that is automatic as soon as you open your doors has been a very popular choice lately. It’s practical in assisting you to see inside your pantry, and adds a special wow factor to what can be a very standard part of your home,” said Lincoln.

The Planar display home is all about clean lines and linear planes, as such, floating shelving has been incorporated throughout the kitchen and study nook to provide areas to showcase decorative items or simply as extra storage.

“Cleverly designed floating shelves with art, decorative items and greenery are very popular in current kitchen designs. So much so, that they are replacing overhead cupboards in favour of adding individual style to your kitchen that can be easily updated over time,” said Lincoln.

Another key design trend that has been incorporated into The Planar’s kitchen is the handle-less cabinetry, enhancing the sleek modern design of the home.

“Handle-less cabinetry gives your kitchen a clean profile and provides longevity given that handles may date,” said Melissa.

“It is a style statement and it’s also practical, making the kitchen much easier to clean with a simple wipe down.,” said Lincoln.

Functionality shouldn’t be an afterthought in your kitchen.

It’s important to think about how you will use your kitchen in the planning stages to ensure you have the right equipment and you are getting the design that you want.

The Planar is the epitome of relaxation and it’s feature kitchen is testament to this. With luxury appliances and high-end finishes, The Planar’s kitchen is the perfect place to unwind or entertain.
