Webb & Brown-Neaves newest display home, The Cabin, is designed to be the antidote to an overload of technology. The display champions Neutral Bliss design, an approach embracing natural beauty and imperfection with wellness in mind, which is growing in popularity as people seek a tranquil space to unwind.

Located in Peet’s display village in the north coastal suburb of Burns Beach, the design of the home was largely inspired by the location, while also being unconventional by challenging the norm of coastal design.

We spoke to WB Innovation & New Product Designer Joseph Calasara, about his inspiration behind the design of the home.

“The design of this house was based on reimagining coastal design and creating a contemporary beach cabin,” Joseph said. “We took a unique and bold design approach in comparison to typical coastal homes and used an unexpected dark colour palette on materials that are rich in texture, tactile and for which may be considered brave.”

“This house was inspired by its location and was designed to create a unique contrast to the existing coastal landscape,” he said. “With a view of the ocean to the side and panoramic bushland to the front, this house displays a unique character that is unexpected within this area.”

Designing a home in a coastal area, it is easy to conform to conventional coastal design, but the WB Team wanted to step outside and challenge the mainstream idea of what a coastal home should look like.

“We have been seeing monochromatic and unoriginal coastal homes for a long time and we felt it was time to challenge this and create something unique and different, but still relevant to the area and lifestyle of Burns Beach,” Joseph said.

“We know that coastal design is popular in Western Australia and will likely never go out of style. We decided to take this design style and reinterpret it with a unique approach. The use of the charcoal colour scheme challenges the over-used monochromatic grey.”

Exhibiting Neutral Bliss design The Cabin is the perfect place to relax and wind down.

“Combined with organic materials, natural timbers, and an abundance of plants and trees, the design creates a calming, serene, resort-style environment,” he said.

“Complementary to the idea that we spend most of our time with technology, more effort is being put into creating a home that promotes wellbeing and relaxation.”

Neutral Bliss design can be seen in The Cabin through the use of the external face brick on the lower floor, imported from Italy and chosen for its mix in colour and the softness of the edges, as well as the ceiling linings in the upper floor which add texture and interest to the space.

“One of the trends we applied to this home was the use of reclaimed San Selmo bricks, which are showcased on the ground floor and complement the landscaping. With hues that transition from light to dark, the brickwork provides a unique feature to the home by contrasting against the dark cladding on the upper floor. Furthermore, it promotes sustainability and means less maintenance which we know is becoming increasingly important to many WB clients.”
