A swimming pool is something that will never go out of style, and is a perfect addition to any Western Australian backyard. If you’re incorporating a pool into your home design, it is important to plan your pool design before the rest of your landscaping, rather than treat it as an afterthought. Webb & Brown-Neaves Innovation and New Product Designer, Joseph Calasara, identified two main things to consider when designing your swimming pool.

“Orientation. Make sure you maximise northern exposure,” he said. “And location.
A swimming pool is also a water feature so make sure it is strategically located for maximum visual effect.”
It is extremely important to match your pool with your lifestyle. “Depending on how you want to use the pool, swimming pools relate to your choice of lifestyle,” Joseph said. “Traditional rectangular and linear pools are the common choice for a healthier and more active lifestyle, while organic and smaller pools are best for entertaining, fun, and socialising.”

Lifestyle is a major factor in Joseph’s advice on choosing the best pool design for you. “First determine how you want to use the swimming pool,” he said. “Is it for entertaining or exercise? Do you have special requirements like heating, chlorine, or salt water?”. “This information will guide you in deciding on the best pool design and specification that will suit your lifestyle.”

Joseph said that small and large pools both have their benefits, depending on your lifestyle.
“Depending on your preference, bigger pools can allow you to do more,” he said.
“More space to use for health and wellbeing, a bigger space for family fun and socialising and a reason to encourage the sport of swimming.” “Smaller pools are more affordable and easier to maintain than a larger pool.
This is the best option if you are wanting a neat and compact pool, and if you have a smaller site.”

With block sizes changing, clients still want a plunge pool or a smaller area despite a narrow block for example.
“Sure, traditional rectangular shaped pools are still popular in bigger sites, but due to blocks becoming smaller, compact swimming pools are certainly becoming more popular these days.” Lighting and landscaping are also important aspects to consider.

“Lighting can extend entertaining after the sun sets. The landscaping should match the pool design, and having an area for parents to relax while the kids are in the pool is important for families.” The major trends in pool design Joseph has seen are changes to the water, and surrounding fences. “Freshwater pools are now available. This is an alternative to chlorine, salt or mineral chlorine-based systems. This gives you the benefits of freshwater and will benefit your garden too.”
“Pool fences are now often being eliminated, while still complying with regulations and requirements.
This is perfect for tight blocks, and if you are wanting an uninterrupted view of your pool. Aside from that, this design will make your swimming pool a staple feature of your new home.”
